Sea Mist

I thought he was joking when he asked me to join him at the beach for a swim. “It’s minus degrees… in January!” He looked at me with a mischievous smile. His charm. Sigh. “Alright.”

We arrived at the beach to see the ocean violent and churning. It looked like it was at war with itself. We approached the shore as I shivered, chilled to the bone. Mark had already stripped down and was smiling ear to ear. “Three words… Polar. Bear. Club.” Yelling, “YeeHaw!” he ran into the surf as I watched the sea mist swallow him whole.

  1. Kay, your flash gives me shivers! What a shock to the system. I do have a funny polar plunge story. Cynthia, whose house was nearly destroyed in the landslide and floods this past June, does polar bear plunges for charity. She has a Granny Cindy character she developed with polyester suit and gray wig. She’s convincing as an elder. So convincing that she caused outrage when she pretended to hobble up to the ice hole with a walker and was pushed in by a friend. Granny Cindy is now notorious in the Keweenaw!

  2. We have polar bear plunges, swims here in Ontario too. Have gone to a few but never ever would participate. Most of the winter I hibernate. Your flash has made me cold 🙂 but in a good way.

  3. A storm blew through here yesterday and the sea was angry! I know what you mean when you say “violent and churning… at war with itself”
That’s what the bay looked like here, I could watch it for hours.
